SUMMARY:Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health in Your Spiritual Life with Dean Kate Moorehead Carroll
DESCRIPTION:Join Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health in Your Spiritual Life author\, The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll\, for an engaging multi-media presentation. \nAs the world changes rapidly\, Christianity too is changing. Amid this transition\, questions arise: How do we know if we are being faithful? How do we know if we are practicing our faith adequately? Just as doctors measure vital signs when determining the health of the body\, so we must learn to recognize the vital signs of the life of the spirit as we move into a post-Christian age. We can learn how to cultivate and nourish our faith by paying attention to the four vital signs: God\, Give\, Grow\, and Group. \nSmall\, incremental changes in behavior can improve our physical health\, lowering our blood pressure for instance. Author Kate Moorehead Carroll contends the same is true for our spiritual health and offers thoughtful and challenging ways to measure the vital signs of faith so we might improve our spiritual health and find again the essence of our life together\, the breath of God in each of us. \nAppropriate for all ages. \nREGISTER HERE\n\nNOTE: Participants can purchase the book here ahead of the Dean Kate’s author talk from the St. John’s Cathedral Bookstore\, which will ship the book to your house: Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health In Your Spiritual Life – St. John’s Cathedral Bookstore & Gift Shop \nDean Kate Bio: Raised Hindu and inspired by religions of the world\, The Very Rev. Kate Moorehead Carroll has been an Episcopal priest for more than 25 years.  In 2009 she was called to be the tenth Dean of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral\, and the first woman to be called as Dean of a Cathedral in the Southeastern United States. Kate’s leadership and vision have led to the creation of the Cathedral District\, and exciting plans for the transformation of Jacksonville’s urban core with over $44 million invested in the development of multi-income housing\, walkable neighborhoods\, parks\, recreational venues\, and retail space that will provide all the elements needed for a thriving downtown neighborhood. \nDean Kate is the author of eight books and produces a 4-6 minute daily devotion on YouTube. Her Substack publication\, Sevenfold Christian\, includes occasional musings and The Weekly Peace and raises funds for immigrant support in Jacksonville FL.  Her most recent book publications are Vital Signs of Faith: Finding Health in Your Spiritual Life\, Angels of the Bible and Healed: How Mary Magdalene Was Made Well.  She has developed a national audience for her writing and scholarship within the Episcopal Church. She frequently speaks at church conferences and workshops. Her books can be purchased at the St. John’s Cathedral Bookstore jaxcathedralbooks.org. Sermons\, videos and podcasts are available at jaxcathedral.org. \nKate is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Vassar College\, a Carpenter Scholar at Yale Divinity School and has a Masters in Divinity cum laude from Virginia Theological Seminary. Kate is married to Dr. Chris Carroll\, a Pediatric Intensive Care Doctor.  Together\, they have six grown children\, two cats and one dog.

SUMMARY:Advent Sound Bath
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, December 20 at 5:30 PM for a special evening led by Sound Resonance\, a trio of dedicated sound healing practitioners on a mission to bring harmony and well-being through the power of sound. Come enjoy an oasis of peace and relaxation during the busy season of Advent; together\, we will wait in the darkness for the coming light. \nREGISTER HERE \nWHAT TO EXPECT \nDeep relaxation and rest!  If this is your first Sound Bath and you aren’t sure what to expect\, here’s a helpful article https://www.verywellmind.com/what-are-sound-baths-4783501. There is nothing for you to “do” and we invite you to enter the space with openness and curiosity. Please let us know if you are hearing impaired when you check in so we can guide you to the area closest to the sounds. You may need to adjust hearing aids! \nClick here to read more about Sound Baths. \nClick here to meet Trine\, Sound Practitioners. \nARRIVAL \nPlease plan on arriving early. The doors will be open starting at 5:30. Come in and start setting up your space. Doors will be locked promptly at 6:00pm as late arrivals will be rather disruptive to the event. \nWHAT TO BRING \nWe want you to be cozy and relaxed! Dress comfortably and bring your yoga mat\, pillow\, warm socks and blanket with you. The floor of Alfriend Hall is rather hard\, so we encourage you to bring extra cushioning\, a thicker mat\, or extra blankets to be comfortable. If laying down for over an hour poses a problem\, you are welcome to bring the chair of your choice. \nCHILDCARE \nWe have a beautiful nursery and an older children’s room equipped with childcare minders for Saturday night. Volunteers will direct you to the nursery where you can sign them in to play during the Sound Bath. If you have not already requested childcare\, please mail Alison Dillehay at AlisonDillehay@gmail.com by Friday at noon. Please include the number of children and their names and ages. \nOTHER HELPFUL TIPS! \nIt’s always important to stay hydrated\, but even more so when experiencing a Sound Bath. Drink lots of water tomorrow and be sure to visit the restroom before you settle into your cozy cocoon. The lights will be dimmed during the Sound Bath and it will last about an hour. \nSTAY FOR REFRESHMENTS! \nWe hope you’ll stay to visit and enjoy some refreshments after our Sound Bath concludes. Ask questions! Visit with old friends and make some new ones. We can’t wait to welcome you to St. John’s. \n  \n \nThis event is presented by The Front Porch: a Spiritual Life Center. The Front Porch welcomes people along all paths who seek to deepen their spiritual lives. We offer contemplative practices\, events\, and classes rooted in Christian spirituality.

SUMMARY:All Souls Requiem Mass & Soup Supper; featuring Duruflé’s Requiem
DESCRIPTION:Our All Souls Requiem Mass (also known as The Commemoration of All Faithful Departed) is a liturgy set aside to remember all our departed loved ones whose lives deeply touched our own. The St. John’s Choir and Choristers will offer a transcendent musical setting of Duruflé’s Requiem to accompany this service. Come hear one of the most powerful choral works of the 20th century\, offered in its original context: a worship service on All Souls’ Day. \nDuruflé’s Requiem is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful sacred compositions of the 20th century. Drawing deeply on the ancient melodies of Gregorian chant\, the work weaves together timeless tradition with rich harmonic colors\, offering a sense of both consolation and transcendence. Heard in the setting of a liturgy\, the music finds its fullest expression\, enfolding worshippers in prayer and reflection. \nThe service will begin at 4:00 PM in the church\, followed by a soup supper in Alfriend Hall. We encourage everyone to join us and stay for fellowship afterwards. (A $10 donation is suggested.) Click here to RSVP online. \nNOTE: Incense will be used during the service. The 7:30 PM Sung Compline will not take place.

SUMMARY:Spires in the Sun: A Presentation with the Author
DESCRIPTION:Join Spires in the Sun author Jonathan Rich for an engaging multi-media presentation on the seminal book about Carpenter Gothic Episcopal Churches in Florida. \nThese churches were constructed in the 1800s\, when Florida was still largely a raw southeastern frontier. Yet these churches breathed the romantic sensibilities of England’s stone parish churches into new wood. Participants may be surprised to learn about one particular church that has an interesting connection to Harriet Beecher Stowe. Spires in the Sun was the winner of the Florida Historical Society’s 2024 Charlton Tibeau Award. This work weaves together architectural\, church\, and Florida history with engrossing storytelling\, vibrant color photographs\, and rare black-and-white historical images. \nAppropriate for all ages. A Q & A will follow the presentation. \nClick here to learn more about Spires in the Sun and to purchase the book. \nTo make sure we have enough space\, click here to RSVP. \nNOTE: Enter into Killeen Hall using the entrance off the Welcome Plaza ramp.
